WELCOME TO myBJJ BRISBANE!
We are passionate about teaching the wonderful art of Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) that transforms people's lifes and leads to a healthy lifestyle, physical fitness and self-confidence.
myBJJ Brisbane offers programmes for adults, kids, and women only. Our philosophy on BJJ is to ensure that each student is taught the fundamental techniques first. Self-defence techniques are emphasised for all beginners, and competition BJJ is taught when they have attained a competent grasp of essential BJJ knowledge. Therefore, our programmes are structured to progressively advance in learning the art while a strong focus on safety in training is kept, especially for those who are starting out.
Having opened only recently, our are classes are still small and now it's the perfect time to start learning BJJ with us, as we will be able to dedicate a lot of attention to every single student. So, don't hesitate, get in touch and
start your free 1-week trial today*!
*Available for adults and kids. Brisbane residents, only.
Our Kids’ programme is divided into the following age groups so that suitable pedagogical methods can be applied:
Play-Jitsu: 3 - 6 years
Jits-Kids: 7 - 10 years
We currently accept Expressions of Interest for kids' classes from 11-14 years.
Children will develop physical abilities while gaining confidence and improving concentration.
Besides self-defence and BJJ skills, they will learn to respect authority and to cooperate, as well as, develop a strong sense of team belonging.
This programme consists of BJJ practice in the Gi (Kimono). It is divided into three skill levels: fundamentals, advanced and masters. Throughout their journey, students are graded according to their skill level which allows them to attend the next level programme. This programme will teach you effective self-defence, basic to high level of BJJ and take-downs. It will improve your physical fitness and mental clarity, increase your self-confidence and lead you to a healthier lifestyle.
This programme teaches BJJ without Gi. No-Gi has become increasingly popular in the past years due to the increase of interest in leg locks amongst BJJ practitioners. No-Gi techniques are very effectively applied in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) where gripping of textile is illegal. Being more dynamic than BJJ in the Gi, this programme will help you improve your explosiveness and help acquire techniques that do not involve gripping of the Gi.
While we believe that women are as capable as men, we understand the need to create a safe, women’s only space to develop competency and confidence. This programme teaches self-defence techniques for women and the fundamentals of BJJ. It provides the opportunity for women to practice their skills with other women, improve their fitness level and gain more self-confidence. Women of all ages and abilities are welcome!

WHERE STUDENTS COME FIRST
At the heart of everything we do is our passion for teaching BJJ and our commitment to our students. This is why we emphasize safety, respect, discipline, community and hygiene. We strongly believe that our values, inspired by traditional martial arts, are becoming increasingly important as they seem to be disappearing in our modern society.
At myBJJ Brisbane we pride ourselves in delivering structured, high quality programmes that will allow individuals to reach their potential. Our instructors are seasoned practitioners of many years and competitors who have won mentionable national and international titles.
Our master, Mario Sergio Yokoyama, black belt under the late Ryan Gracie, has founded myBJJ in Sydney in 2010. Being part of myBJJ International Association, our students have the opportunity to train at other myBJJ academies when travelling within Australia or overseas.
myBJJ Brisbane is located in the heart of Brisbane, only 10min from the CBD, in Fortitude Valley. Amenities will include brand new mat area and training equipment, change rooms, a shower, seating for visitors and a kid’s play area.
Where the Passion Begins
Our team is dedicated to providing a high level of training and getting the best out of every student. Our passion for BJJ motivates us to share with you the knowledge of this wonderful art.
Originally from France where he started his BJJ journey 15 years ago, Professor Richard "Somchai" สมชาย learned the art in France with Prof.Christian Derval and Sao Paulo with Grand Master Flavio Behring, Brazil. Prior to that, he has practiced various martial arts such as Judo, Aikido and Jeet Kune Do. Having some Vietnamese blood, he was always drawn to Asia where he has spent many years and has learned traditional Chinese and Thai Massage Therapy. In 2016 Richard moved to Australia and started to train under Professor Mario Sergio Yokoyama in 2017.
Besides BJJ, Professor Richard is passionate about Qigong and Far Eastern Traditional Medicine. Professor Richard’s approach to teaching Jiu-Jitsu is to provide students first with a solid knowledge of BJJ fundamentals upon which he teaches a wide array of jiu-jitsu techniques which also includes uncommon techniques.

WHAT IS BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting. Also known as “The Gentle Art”, it does not involve any striking techniques. BJJ has its roots in traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo and has developed into an own art through innovations, practices and adaptations. The concept of BJJ is that a weaker, smaller person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger opponent by taking the fight to the ground and applying joint locks and chokeholds. This is why BJJ has been proven to be very effective for self-defence.
DO I NEED TO BE FIT TO START?
No. It is a common misconception that one needs to be fit to start the practice of martial arts. There is a wide variety of BJJ students in terms of physical fitness, ability, age and body type. Everyone trains according to their abilities and with time physical fitness will improve provided training is consistent. Through regular practice, tremendous physical improvements and a high fitness level can be achieved.
AM I TOO OLD FOR BJJ?
Never. No matter your age, you can begin your BJJ journey. You can adapt your training to your own physical capabilities and achieve a high level in BJJ through consistent training even if you started at an advanced age. At myBJJ Brisbane, we insist that training partners respect each other’s abilities and allow their training partners to safely practice the sport. Given that this martial art was designed for weaker/smaller individuals, it involves techniques that can be practiced by everyone.
IS PRACTICING BJJ SAFE?
At myBJJ Brisbane we pride ourselves in having a strong focus on safety. We ensure that students only practice techniques that are within their skill level and our training instructions make our students aware of any risks that training BJJ involves. Only when students have attained a competent level of BJJ fundamentals, they will be allowed to participate in live training/sparring. Given that BJJ is a combative contact sport, risk of injury exists but through our instructions and education, it is kept at a minimum level.
WHAT ARE YOUR MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS?
myBJJ Brisbane offers two membership options to suit everyone’s needs and busy schedules. You can choose from unlimited BJJ classes or a 10-classes pass. Contracts can be canceled at any time and have no minimum term. For kids, the same options are available. We offer family discounts and FREE 1-WEEK TRIAL*. Please enquire to receive more information.

WHY SHOULD I DO BJJ?
A whole book can be written about the benefits of BJJ but let’s try to summarise them as follows:
Besides improving your physical fitness, getting in the best shape of your life, adopting a healthy life style, becoming more self-confident, building character and learning how to defend yourself, you will also make great friends and join a friendly community of like-minded individuals.
